I don't know if this is what's at work here, but the Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleur doesn't get the respect it deserves today.

When it came out in 1967 it would have been a big deal as it was all aluminum construction (with a few exceptions), where as the previous derailleur, the 1963 Record had been all steel and bronze, not an aluminum part to be seen. When the Super Record derailleur, essentially a NR with black anodizing and titanium pivot bolts, came out in 1974, it didn't replace the Nuovo Record derailleur, but was sold along side it as a more expensive and lighter derailleur. I think at that point people new to the sport started viewing the Nuovo Record derailleur as a cheaper version of the Super Record, instead of an earlier derailleur.
