Well it appears that Jim Cunningham confirmed your hunch was correct about the writing being Mario's own handwriting!

Several people have written to me off list and were excited about the box, sharing your opinion that it was "valuable", and "worth keeping my hands on". That is a true surprise to me!

After these comments, I am tempted to place it for auction on eBay to see what would happen. I really don't know what to do with it otherwise.
