Lou,

This address is for the period after he "left" Bicycles by Confente in LA, the next place Mario was AFTER leaving Masi. Technically, Mario was "on the move" during the time he was in Monterey; and therefore probably not leaving his "long term" address with people on the bottom of a hub box. Mario was not happy at Farrier's place; therefore his next move which was to marry Lisa and move back to Cardiff, CA where she owned a home.

I never said that the box itself was used for shipping the hubs; that would be unlikely, and obviously as you said, there is no postage on the box. Also, there are apparently two other person's handwriting on the box. Who do you suppose those belong to? A backwards trace of the origins of that box of hubs would be interesting. Where did Kevin get the hubs? Where did the previous person get them? How is it that this box of hubs ended up in PA over 20 years later? Check the date on the lockluts of the hubs. What is the date on them. I know that all of the rear ders. and cranksets that are original to early Carlsbad Masis are dated 1973. If the hubs are the same way and the date on the locknuts is '73, that might suggest the origin of Masi in Carlsbad.

I still think there is a possibility that the handwriting may be Simonetti. If the box was used orginally as a notepad to record Mario's current location to someone like Simonetti who took the call at Masi and wrote it on a handy hub box, later transfering the info to his address/phone book or whatever, it would explain the address AND phone number being present. I agree that the phone number would not likely be on the box if it was just being shipped to Mario. Needless to say there are a number of possible secenarios. I think it was a notepad.

Brian Baylis La Mesa, CA This is a little more interesting than discussing Masi serial numbers; but not by much.

It is more likely that if it has Mario's address on it, it was sent to him. Therefore it was most likely addressed TO him by someone else.

It would seem that if someone took the trouble to put his name on the box for shipment that they would have also used the box for the actual shipping container and put postage on the box and taped it shut. It doesn't appear that is the case. And, why put the telephone number on the box? My theory: Mario wason the move after leaving Masi. He was going to be working with other people who also had bicycling stuff about in the same area. He put his address and telephone number on his boxes so that if they got misplaced with someone else's stuff, they could identify it. Now, you would think that the name alone would have sufficed for that, but having the address and telephone number is certainly a more complete way to identify your stuff. Lou Deeter, Orlando FL
