"VeloNews Buyer's Guide: The Handmade Alternative By John Peters This report filed February 23, 2005 With frame materials and production processes becoming so advanced, one must wonder if there is room for the custom frame builder to compete with major manufacturers. Dotting the map from coast to coast, custom builders are often individuals working in their garages making one frame at a time. These individuals rarely have home offices to visit, so to get a read what's new with custom builders, VeloNews visited the 1st Annual Handmade Bicycle Show, held in Houston, Texas, in January.
After a lap of the show floor, it was evident that these builders favor variety. The 30 craftsmen who went to Houston offered every incarnation of steel and aluminum, along with titanium, carbon and even bamboo. With major manufacturers, frame assembly must follow a specific formula, and in some cases the frames are actually pulled directly out of molds. This keeps down costs and prevents a bike shortage for retailers. And while stock sizes may allow for a bike that's good for you, a custom frame can yield a bike that's perfect for you.
"I am more than happy to fit each rider, as this is part of the custom experience," said show organizer and builder Don Walker, voicing a philosophy shared by many at the show. "And I will design each frame around a variety of tubes, based on their measurements, to make the rider have a much better comfort factor and improved performance in their riding."
East coast builder Richard Sachs summed it up best during his seminar on framebuilding: "You can make a bike that fits, or one that performs well. To make a good bike you have to overlap fit and performance."
Sachs is considered a master, and if you were to put in an order tomorrow for one of his frames, you likely wouldn't get your bike for 38 months as he only builds bikes to race. If you're looking to tour or just cruise, this legendary builder isn't right for you.
The show also revealed a level of detail unmatched by larger companies. Titanium framebuilder Darren Crisp articulated this point: "I don't have to contend with these big players on sales figures or keep up with the latest trends. I don't put time limits on how long it takes to build a frame or how many need to leave the shop on a weekly basis for a sales forecast. I have learned from Italian artisans that to make a great object, you must first throw your watch out the window."
Customers typically talk directly with the custom builder, who will ask what they want out of the bike and how they will use it. After plugging in this data - along with a customer's measurements - into a knowledge base and building philosophy, a custom frame builder then designs your bike - the key word always being "your" bike. The custom builder is not only a craftsman, but a guide and counselor, and as a craftsman won't accept less-than-ace alignment or imperfect welds.
Philosophy plays a part in the custom process. If you decide a custom frame is in your future, it is highly recommended that you speak with as many builders as possible. While they're asking what you want from a bike, ask them what they think a bike should be, and go with the one you feel best matches what you are looking for.
To get a bike that is right for you, it's also very important to listen to your builder once you've picked him or her. Almost every exhibitor at the Houston show shared the horror story of a customer who demanded they do something they knew in their heart was wrong - producing 78-degree parallel geometry, for example. In such cases, the customer always winds up hating the bike.
Despite the relatively high prices for custom bikes, custom builders aren't building bikes to get rich - they do it because they truly love the craft. Most are cyclists themselves, and say the biggest benefit is seeing the smiling faces of their customers. Carbon-fiber specialist Nick Crumpton summed-up the framebuilder's credo best when he explained, "My goal is to ensure that people are happy on their bikes."
If you're looking for your first bike since you were 10 years old, it's a sound idea to go with something off the rack. But if you're to the point of considering bikes in the $3000-plus range, it might be time to consider a custom alternative. It's likely that when you buy your second or third bike, you can get a custom-tailored frame for about the same amount of cash as a machine-produced frame.
