In 1948, Gerrit Schulte became pursuit world champion. On the concrete surface of the Olympic stadium in Amsterdam, he rode on an ordinary bicycle "alle reputaties aan gruzelementen". In the finale Sculte defeated the well-respected Fausto Coppi.
