Steven and Mitzi did a knock up job translating from the Dutch. The sole thing that was missed is that it does not say that he used an "ordinary bicycle" but rather an "ordinary track bicycle". The combined translations of Steven and Mitzi would therefore be:

So to answer Tom's question of earlier, it does not appear that he caught Coppi, but rather 'only' beat him to the finish, which could mean almost half a track worth of time difference. This brings about another question, how much of the win could be attributed to knowledge of the track and home-town advantage. Schulte had in fact won the Dutch national pursuit championship on the same track 7 times before the world's. He was the rider who was by the far the most intimate with the aspects of the Amsterdam track. Apart from his superlative ride in Amsterdam, he never did better than 3rd in any other World Championship.
