With all due respect to Duncan, I seriously doubt the ability of a modern Al or Carbon frame to last 50 to 70000 miles. I do believe Ti can and is worthy of my consideration if I am in the market for a modern 'wonder'. The extreme light race bikes are specialty machines, and I contend that over the course of my riding years, I have stressed bicycles as much or beyond what a racer does in one season. Even for similar mileage. People will buy this stuff to be like Lance, and then find the long term use of such a machine is uncomfortable, limited use (can't go to the store and bring something home), and likely not durable, or as previously stated, not repairable. Again, I think there are some good things happening with modern equipment, but the real effect for most of us (the regular riding public) is negligible.
