Not ironic at all...

Here's my understanding: The oil port in Campagnolo road hubs is for rejuvinating the grease in the hub with a _little_ oil (likely after the bike has sat for more than a few months).

If you use oil instead of grease in your track bike hubs you removed the dust caps on the hubs and don't use them (the balls are completely exposed). Eddy's hour bike didn't even have dust caps on the pedals!
