The possibility of a Campagnolo TI Super Record BB axle breaking was well know quite a few years before Larry Fignon hit the deck when his broke. A foolhardy move for a seasoned pro.

What was that, just last year, where a pro "lost his chain" in a TT because he decided not to run a front derailleur? Stoooopid.
