Subject: [CR]Trek heavyweights???

If you want to talk vintage bicycle weights, my memory says that most 531-campagnolo bikes were quoted at 22 or 23 lbs, and its a believable number. In 1973 Raleigh even admitted the regular pro was 24-25 lbs.

Campy bikes were 1/2 to 1 lbs heavier than the lightest early 1970's stuff. The 531 raleigh team pro was quoted at 20 lbs (a lie), and the px-10 was quoted at 21 lbs (Eugene Sloan's Complete Book of Bicycling) and i'd really be surprised if Peugeot wasn't lying all those years ago since the only thing that was substantially lighter than campy on a px-10 was the simplex derailleurs.

As for whether TREK makes heavy weight bikes, last tuesday i held a trek 500 / reynolds 501 with cast head-tube, seat lug, and the cool dropouts with integral cable stops (cable enters seatstay on far side of the cast bottom bracket.) This bike compared very favorably with a 2" smaller 1977 raleigh competition GS which was 531 double butted throughout with campy dropouts and lugs with heart-shaped cutouts. Forks were not included in these unscientific "which one weighs more" tests but forks came with minimal crowns.
