Pretty much every pro was riding as you say "yucky moulded thingys" by the 1970s (and they rode whatever saddle they wanted to irregardless of their sponsor). By the 1970s there were very few examples of anyone in the pro peloton riding Brooks or Ideale from the race photos I've examined.

There is a photo of Merckx riding a butchered Brooks when he was seeking relief from a boil but that was in one race?

I really have no preference of one over the other except when it comes to the weight and weather issues.
