There was a racer named Bernard Gauthier who raced for Mercier from 1949 through 1961. He was a 4-time winner of Bordeaux-Paris, so probably fairly popular in France. Perhaps there is some connection, since Mercier built bikes for other brands (weren't Bobet bikes a product of Mercier?).
