The cage-ectamy was a complete success. Thanks to those that offered advice. For the archives: I was able to reuse the pin. I re-assembled by squeezing the whole assy. together in a vice, using some shim stock between the ears and the barrel of the pivot to prevent the ears crushing. No binding, and all back together.
