G.J. were known for nice functional bikes. The Rambler brand made its way around the bicycle industry over the years. Looking at this bike I think it was used as a touring bike rather than a racer. Handlebars turned up, carbide lamp and sprung saddle lead me to believe this. Racing bikes of that era were very basic in construction and design. They were conscious of weight also so they were cautious of what was used for a track bike which was the majority of racing of that period.

I have an early Columbia racing machine from that period that I will be working on in the future. Coincidentally I also have a bike up on ebay right now that is of this period and probably a racing machine. You would not believe how light this bike is, it rivals many of the machines of the 1970s, 80s and early 90s weight wise. Although it has regular pedals it has the ability to be a racer without a lot of trouble. Note the saddle, although it is missing the leather, it is bare bones and really more suited for racing. Also has original Kelly bars that allow you to adjust the handlebar height and width with the turn of one bolt. You could easily make these drop bars without removal if you wanted to hit the track.
