Try Brasso metal polish for the final clean up. It's turps based and mildly abrasive. I use it all the time with great success without damaging the original finish - assuming the latter is a good quality baked enamel.
It's also good for removing paint scuffs, rubber scuffs, stubborn tar etc., and restores a high gloss to tired paint.
