Apparently, that last technique is what Henri de Toulouse-Lautec observed when he worked on his famous Simpson Chains poster: http://www.sdmart.org/lautrec/Simpsofs.html Or it could be that he simply ws taking artistic license. By the way, I highly recommend the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition at the National Gallery in D.C. It will be moving to a museum in Chicago in a couple of months.
