Subject: [CR]Pic of the Day - Serse wins P-R, and French eBayers

First - Thanks to everyone who helped with translation of the French eBay-er's "rejection letter" to me. I guess I can't always get my way (!) I do want to say that the 99.9% of the French eBay sellers I have approached in the past year have been quite willing to work with me to sell and ship magazines to the USA, even if their auction initially stated "France Only" or Italy, etc. Many of the sellers seem surprised that some weird guy in Ohio would be interested in any old French sports periodicals in the first place!

Also, so far all of the sellers have been patient, cordial, and left positive feedback for me DESPITE the occasional slow payment, bad translation, or other problems. Gracious sellers, every one (so far - knock on wood).

The same day as the rejection letter, I received this from another seller under similar circumstances: "Oui, je peux vous les envoyer aux Etats Unis mais les frais de port seront plus chers : 6,50 ?, et je n'ai pas PAYPAL, ce qui rend le paiement difficile. A moins que vous ayez une solution." Now that's a MUCH easier translation - "Yes, I can send them to you to the United States but the carriage costs will be more expensive: 6,50?, and I do not have PAYPAL, which makes the payment difficult. With less than [unless] you have a solution."

Again, gracious and considerate. French eBay sellers - I highly recommend them :-)

Serse Coppi's Paris-Roubaix

The finish of the 1949 Paris-Roubaix was a clumsy affair, with three riders getting lost on the way into the velodrome and covering a few hundred extra meters. The three still managed to arrive first at the finish line, with André Mahé leading-in Frans Leenen and Jacques Moujica, but they had not followed the official course, and when Serse Coppi lead in the rest of the field. At first Mahé was declared winner, but the Coppi brothers protested the results, which were overturned, and Serse was awarded first place. Five days later, the French Cycling Federation changed the results again, declaring Mahé winner with Leenen second. Six months later the UCI gave the final word on the matter, declaring Mahé and Serse Coppi joint winners, with Leenen 3rd and Moujica 4th.

In this photo a delighted Serse (left) is about to plant a big kiss on his brother Fausto.

Serse would die two years later from head injuries suffered during the Tour of Piedmont. Sad loss of a gentle, popular, and likeable rider.
