Anyone know the b.b. height on a 1973, 51cm Paramount track bike? Riding that, I had zero threat of clipping my pedal on the 44deg. boards of the Velodrome at Bloomer Park (Rochester MI). That angle requires about 15mph min. to stay afloat.

But as a side note, when I couldn't handle my speed around a turn (because I had yet to develop motor memory of track skills), I did indeed hit the outer guard rail about 3/4 of the way round, and my pedal dragged as I plummeted down the "wall" .... oouuuuch!

It depends a lot on the pedals. Short spindles, a minimum under the spindle and an outer profile that angles to match the track are the factors. Talking toeclip type pedals a Suntour Superbe gives much more clearance than Campagnolo Record. The Suntour's can be further profiled also. A real favorite is the last generation Shimano Dura-Ace and Ultegra pedals. With these types of pedals an 11" BB would allow an experienced rider to not even think about hitting a pedal on a fairly steep (45 degree?) track like in Blaine Mn.

I spent some time on that track with a Paramount that had a 10 1/2" BB. With Campy pedals- very dangerous. With modified Suntours-almost passable.
