Lou, maybe this is something that you can put in your encyclopedia!

When I started compiling the Used Bike Buyers Guide, this was EXACTLY the thought I could do. Didn't work. The frames with initials or logos in the seatstay caps or fork crowns are numerous, but there are many more that have no such markings. Then, as Mike mentioned, variations model to model are also different. If obvious marking or decals are missing, I first check the bb threading for a good indication of country of origin (again can bite you). Then I try to determine approximate age by braze-ons, lack of braze-ons, rear spacing and seatpost size. Finally, I take note of the dropouts and fork tips used. If all else fails, post pics to a website and share with the folks on the list who can probably help you. I have an entire chapter on identification in the text portion of the guide.
