To some extent, anyway. The original Rallyes were, as you suggest, little more than a Record body with a long cage. The Simplex long-cage units at least had the advantage of both upper and lower pivot springs, something the Ralleye didn't get until quite late in production.

John: Just to clarify, I think you may have it backwards here - the original Rally (1974) is the double-pivot model with the cast upper body. Sturdy, reasonably good shifting performance, a stunning looker.... It replaced the "boat anchor" Gran Turismo derailleur. A quantum leap, IMO. Later (early 1980s?), Campagnolo cheapened it up big-time, replacing it with a derailleur that was Rally cage plates on a Nuovo Gran Sport body (with a new "Rally" outer plate to tart it up a bit). Very disappointing, to say the least.
