I believe the first design Rally had one design flaw and that was a thin neck, just below the DO screw. I have a couple that broke exactly at the same spot and only one that is intact. Perhaps that was a reason to go back to the NR cage.

That weakness was fairly quickly (for Campagnolo!) corrected by adding a stiffening rib to the upper casting. If you look closely at any of them that are often for sale on eBay, you will almost always see this rib, just below the upper pivot.

Again, the later Rally used a Nuovo Gran Sport body with the long Rally cage plates tacked onto it - a very poor design, IMO.
