Subject: [CR]Update on 116 BCD Campy GS

For those interested, I have more information about the 116 BCD Campy Grand Sport cranks I mentioned a couple of weeks ago. Chuck's Campy timeline mentions this as appearing in the 1982 catalog, but it must have been introduced earlier as it is listed in Sutherlands 3rd Edition, copyrighted in 1980. I have now received a 116 BCD GS triple I bought on eBay, and the arms are marked 1982 ("2" in a circle), which doesn't help in establishing the actual introduction date, but does verify that this crank is definitely on-topic.

The chainrings appear to be identical to those used by the later off-topic Victory and Triomphe. Contrary to popular belief, but as correctly stated by Chuck's timeline, the smallest available ring is 35T. I can verify this as I have purchased and received from a list member a 35T ring. Popular belief was that 36T was the smallest, and indeed Sutherlands 3rd Edition so states. Perhaps they were in error, or maybe this was originally the case and perhaps 1982 was the introduction of the triple version along with the 35T ring. In any case, I was always puzzled why NOS Victory/Triomphe rings often came in a factory paper sleeve marked GS or Grand Sport. Now I know. The 116 BCD GS must be one of the least known of the classic Campy cranks, as most people associate this circle only with the off-topic Victory/Triomphe.

Having received the triple and the 35T ring, I'm looking to buy or trade for a 43T ring (or 44T if such existed) to more evenly split the range between 52 and 35.
