I have a similar situation with the fork on my 1986 Peugeot PZ-10 (since Dale posted the pics on the CR site, I assume it qualifies for KOF). The chrome was very pitted, but shined after extensive polishing. Now, however, it looks dull again. I believe than when chroming a frame one plates first with copper, then nickel, then chrome. I'm assuming I polished away most of the chrome, exposing the nickel. Does anyone have experience with nickel-plated parts to know if they dull between polishings?

The puzzler (for me) is that when I polished it with "Blue Magic" metal polish it cleaned up pretty nicely and the rag was very black. This would make sense if it were aluminum I was polishing. Note there is no rust, no pits, no flaking or peeling at all. The fork crown doesn't have this problem. Any ideas on why the chrome would do this?
