That depends a great deal on the type of frame you have. Some builders have sensible serial numbers that can be used to identify date of manufacture quite precisely. Others do not, and more indirect means must be brought to bear. Pictures are immensely helpful in this, as are any seemingly minor details regarding the bike's components, history, owners and so on.

It can be quite an adventure.
