Wow, Deborah, that's a huge topic!

There are many ways to guess at the bike's approximate age but few ways to reliably nail down a firm date of manufacture. The serial numbers stamped in the frames can help, but some don't help at all.... It depends on the maker and if the evaluator has knowledge of the serial numbering "code". Unfortunately, some makes are undescipherable (Peugeot for instance!)

IF the bike has it's original parts, oftem there are strong clues there... For instance, Campagnolo equipment has a date stamping on the top of the rear derailleurs and inside the hubs that can help...

You might try taking detailed photos of the bike in question, post them on the web & allow we members of this CR list to tell you what we think..
