Heres a secret:

Go to your local BMW car dealership and get a tube of something called "gummipflege" it is a dressing for weatherstripping that is perfect for cleaning gum brake hoods and restoring a measure of suppleness to the precious hoods....and far less expensive than "what the market will bear" pricing for NOS hoods for bikes you ride regularly! Now, a restored bike/trailer queen/show bike? By all means go to the usual sources for new (like the CR webpage sponsors)

When checking the hoods on E-Bay that Tom Dalton was enquiring about I noticed the price. With a little while to go they were just about exactly what Dale is charging for some he has in the shop at Cycles De Oro. I might suggest that if anyone wants to be sure they are getting the real thing they could just ask Dale to ship them a pair. Support your local list meister! (:<) Tom Sanders Lansing, Mi

Also, when you see hoods any sort of "white powdery residue" on them, be very cautious. That may be something that has cooked out of the rubber over time, causing it to become less pliable, or it may be mold-release compound that has oxidized heavily over time. My experience with residues like that on brake hoods has been that they are darn near impossible to remove completely. Better IMO to get pristene NOS hoods from someone like Dale or me (I have the genuine, correct NR/SR ones for $79/pr. in perfect NOS condition) than to risk getting a part that either tears or won't look right....
