Thats right, especially with old old thin cotton track tires.....most of the 140-190 gram tires still stashed in califorina have remained on rims to avoid "handling difficulties"

One tip for being able to use old, used rims is 1" masking tape, but get the good stuff with a glazed face surface. 1" is necessary to wrap around the edges of the rim and fully cover the unremoved schmutz (old glue) ---but the rim still needs to be fairly smooth (ie no lumpy schmutz under the tape)

And the spare rims muct be CLEAN rims. The tire must be able to slide easily on the surface of the rim. Any glue residue will prevent the rim from sliding, and it may never go on. If you pull too hard, you'll rip the casing.
