I ran the Sturmey Archer AW with a 3-speed freewheel on a 73 Gitane Tour de France for a while back when the bike was new. All I did was change the rear wheel and adjust the Simplex derailleur to keep the chain out of the spokes. It worked fine. I also tried the setup that Joel mentions in his posting; putting two SA sprockets onto the driver with the concave faces away from one another. That also worked using the Simplex derailleur. I still have that wheel but it has a rim for tubular tires without a mate for the front.
