an unamed former listmember who has 20 sets of SLs and 15 sets of SRs in his NOS inventory sent me the following message:

i took 4 of each. the sr center section is a much better looking polish job. almost "satin" like as compared to plated-over steel. a noticeable diff between the sets.

Sounds like what I'm looking for. This is the second good source confirming the pattern, after a input from a former Campy USA employee. Actually the third if you include the guy who originally made me aware of the possible difference. I guess I'm just unwilling to take anyone's story without asking some questions, at least when it comes to matters of "great importance." . Still wondering why the molding lines on that one set of SRs look especially heavily ground out...
