Skid lids WERE connected in the middle at one time, not sure if it was when they were very first introduced originally, or at the tail end of their "fabled" existance.

No doubt. If you hit the ground just so, the Skid Lid could save your life. It's just that if they had tied the four sections together at the top and used a denser foam they could have made a far better helmet.
