I was able to get a couple old tags off my 1974 Jack Taylor with a hair dryer and a plastic scraper. Take a look at the before and after pics at http://www.blackbirdsf.org/taylor/6734.html There was one on the back of the head tube and one on the upper down tube below the double cable stop. Came off clean as a whistle with no paint damage. DON'T use a heat gun though. That gets hot enough to strip the paint off.
