After having won the previous day's stage Bordeaux, Guy Lapébie had some trouble during the 9th stage to Saint-Sébastion. On the bad pavé through Rochefort, he crashed heavily and broke the headtube from his frame, a "Lapébie"! The entire French team would come to his aid and bring him back to the peloton.
