The flattened aero frame you refer to, the Gitane"Profil" was the finest of the production aero bikes with a true shaped steel fairing coming off the head tube. Hinault rode one in '79 with Campy components, but Gitane produced them ( bravely, I think, considering French sensibilities) with the more appropriate Dura Ace EX components ( this was before the AX components were full released). It had DD pedals, (oversized crank holes, lowered spindless pedals) but sidepull brakes. Gitane's finest moment to my mind.
