my guess is that 'aero' bikes of the time were more of a fad, then an enduring staple -i wasn't riding any such thing in 81 or 82, a little before my time. this is really only an observation, since, as you've pointed out, not much discussion seems to happen with such frames or components. and they don't pop-up on ebay or classifieds all that often. though i wonder how many listees have an aero frame in their collections.

though if you want to have an aero bike of you're own, there is this tubeset of Columbus Air to make your own. ebay#7164617110

all i can say about aero bikes is that i enjoy my Gios aero. though the main triangle has round tubes, it's only the seat-stays and fork blades that are "flattened".
