Hi Garth,
it's probably not the stem/frame combination that is the problem, but the stem/bar part. Since this kind of stem just pushes a small part of the bar into the front of the bar, there is not too much enclosure on the bar itself. A 3TTT stem, for example, wraps around the complete bar and the pressure is distributed evenly. The Shimano aero/AX stems had the similar problem as the mechanically related Cinelli stem. Nice and clean, but you really have to crank them to get the bars tight ...
