I have come across a couple Raleighs with Atom or Normandy hubs and equipped with Suntour freewheels which did have steel spacers between the freewheel and hub. Using the Suntour freewheel on another similar hub caused damage to the hub due to the freewheel riding up over what was apparently too low a shoulder at end of threads. A 1mm aluminum spacer was extruded right over shoulder. Ended up with another thicker aluminum spacer, also now a permanent part of hub, followed by a steel S-A spacer. Not saying every application needs a spacer but some apparently do.
