I too vote for "make the call." You at least get information to resolve a curiosty. At most you get an offer you won't refuse a second time.
I called up an old friend just asking about the old days. He emptied his bookshelves and basement in response. I was overwhelmend and overjoyed at his generosity. It was unexpected. Hope the same fate comes your way.
