Are Nail catchers the same as what we refer to as "flint catchers"? This name in the UK covers a lot of tyre saving gadgets such as a boot lace or a piece of tape tied between the stays, but are more normally one of the propriety products such as Carlton tyre savers or Pelissier flint catchers. The Carlton came in a variety of designs, either to attach to the brake spindles, or to clip onto the mudguards. I always found these extremely efficient when cycling on unmetalled tracks and apart from stopping many punctures by removing the debris before it could get hammered in they also increased tub life by extracting flints before they could split the canvas of the cover. A godsend in the 60's when tubs cost a fortune. Surely those Tour de France veterans found this when they use to go over the mountains when these were just stone littered tracks.
