Subject: [CR]questions about racing in the 30's

I took a peek at yesterday's "pic of the day" and started going through the rest of the album and a few questions came to mind that I hope someone could answer. Obviously everyone rode tubulars, and carried spares. What happened when you did get a flat? Was some not so reliable quick drying glue used or was the tire put on dry and the rider simply rode a slow pace just to finish the stage? They didn't actually ride all out on unglued tires did they?

Also, there was a reference to doping in the 30's. What substance was used to "dope?"

Those pictures really make a guy want to put on his wool jersery and goggles and ride up a mountain. Can anyone suggest any books about this period of cycling, either still in print or out of print.

thanks,
