Always thought Gitane was the best of the French bikes, but that's what you think when you're 15, get your first good bike and find out that sew-ups sing. My Gitane is identical to the one above except for the color and size (no connection to the seller). Same details, decals, dropouts, chrome, and it came with all french components: Mafac centerpulls, stronglight, Brooks, Normandy Luxe, and Huret Jubilee. Didn't appreciate the French stuff enough when I was a kid and put SunTour Superbe brakes on it in the late 70s, and later Campagnolo. Fortunately I saved all the original stuff and last year I put all the french stuff back on, substituting a TA cyclotourist triple crank for the Stronglight which was cracked. Also put Mathouser pads in the Mafac calipers.

Have not heard a sound from the Mafacs and they are plenty powerful for my canyon descents--no need to lean on another rider with Campagnolo brakes.
