i think "original" means the way a bike was first built and/or built up. for example, if i had ordered a 1972 cinelli sc with no chrome at all, that would be the original finish for that particular bike. that the factory normally specified chrome lugs, etc., would not make the finish on my special order "non original." and similarly, if spence wolf built it up for me with period-correct phil wood bb and hubs, that would make those components original and correct to my bike, even though those components would not have been spec'd from the factory. if i sell my bike and the new owner has it refinished but with the standard chrome lugs, crown, etc., then i would say that the new finish is factory-correct, but not original. same thing if he builds it up with all nuovo record - standard factory spec components, but not as originally built up.

anyway, that's just the way i see it. boy, i could use a nap.

\r?\n> I've been reading the cinelli posts, but haven't

\r?\n> responded since I don't own one. But I was intrigued

\r?\n> by the posts talking about these frames being built up

\r?\n> with TA parts, etc when that wassn't what was listed

\r?\n> in the catalogs. It's a similar situation to my

\r?\n> raleigh record ace. The catalog says the bike comes

\r?\n> stock with simplex super lj derailleurs but the

\r?\n> original owner of this bike placed his order he

\r?\n> specifically asked for suntour vgt derailleurs and he

\r?\n> gave me the receipts and paperwork to prove it. So

\r?\n> then I ask you, is the bike in original state as I

\r?\n> have it now with simplex super lj derailleurs or was

\r?\n> it when I bought it from the original owner and it

\r?\n> still had the suntour vgt derailleurs he asked for? As

\r?\n> a matter of fact when I first contacted him about his

\r?\n> for sale ad him and I had a bit of an argument about

\r?\n> this very question, since I wanted the bike I let him

\r?\n> have the last word which was pretty much, "Well, it's

\r?\n> original to me."

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I think you can make the argument either way, so I

\r?\n> guess I'll take the easier way out and say it's a

\r?\n> matter of personal opinion. I would tend to opt for

\r?\n> the catalog specs. Any thoughts?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> BTW, I was in the local shop a few weeks ago and I

\r?\n> noticed a scratched up, slightly rusted bike up on one

\r?\n> of the work stands. I didn't pay much attention to it

\r?\n> first but then after all the workers were staring at

\r?\n> me (they all know I'm into vintage road bikes)

\r?\n> waiting for my reaction I noticed the headbadge and

\r?\n> asked, "Holy @#!* is that a cinelli?" It was and it

\r?\n> was in a bit of a sad state. It was a SC that belongs

\r?\n> to a woman who rides it all year round even during

\r?\n> winter and despite the shop workers' pleas refuses to

\r?\n> put fenders on it. It's great because it's being

\r?\n> ridden, but it's sad because at least in my opinion

\r?\n> it's not being properly cared for. I don't want to say

\r?\n> that it's not cherished but... That's another

\r?\n> argument.
