First Flight Bicycles To Host 5th Annual Crossroads Bike Festival
STATESVILLE, NC First Flight Bicycles is hosting the Fifth Annual Crossroads Bike Swap in Statesville, NC. This three day event will bring cyclists together to reminisce and celebrate the rich history of mountain biking.
The festivities begin on Saturday August 27 with a 10K Itusi Trail Run at Lake Norman State Park. The Itusi Trail has been built entirely with volunteer labor and all profits from the weekend will help support the trail building effort. The festivities will then shift to the park community building in the afternoon. Ross Shafer, Paul Sadoff, Jacquie Phelan, Joe Murray and Paul Thomasberg will be speaking about their respective roles in the birth of mountain biking. The day will finish with an open house at First Flight where 350+ vintage bikes, from 1869 through the 1990\u2019s, will be on display along with hundreds of bike parts and several thousand catalogs and magazines.
Sunday, August 28 starts out with a scenic road bike tour of Iredell County. There will be opportunities to check out Linney\u2019s Mill, Ft. Dobbs and gemstones at Hiddenite. While everyone is out enjoying the ride, we will set up the swap meet at the Statesville Civic Center. There will be 40 vendor tables and over 100 show bikes to check out. Classic bikes such as the Shelby Donald Duck bike, high wheel ordinary bikes, Stingray muscle bikes and Whizzer motor bikes will be on display. It will be a great way to relive your child hood. During the swap meet, we will hold the drawing for a Fox Racing Shocks Vanilla fork, Cane Creek Terros Disc Tubeless wheel set and Shimano Deore XT disc wheel set. We have recently purchased the vintage inventory of Bob\u2019s Cycle Shop in Rome, GA. Bob was a long time Schwinn dealer and saved examples of some of the more interesting Schwinn bikes concentrating on Stingrays and BMX bikes. There are also about 30 years worth of Schwinn catalogs, dealer kits, parts lists and dealer paraphernalia. We will be displaying some of the nicer pieces as well as selling off some of the duplicate items.
The \u201cRide with the Legends\u201d off-road ride will be the Monday activity. We will explore some classic East-Coast single track in the Pisgah National Forest near Asheville. This will be a great opportunity to ride with the mountain bike pioneers and compare your skill level to some world class athletes while talking about frame and component design at the same time. Figure on a ride time of four to five hours.
Joe Murray Joe started road riding in Marin County California in the 1970\u2019s and entered his first mountain bike race at the age of 15. Joe began to receive some recognition when he finished fourth in the 1983 Rockhopper race. The next year, Joe won 15 races including 8 straight and finished as the NORBA National Champion. The next year, Joe used a string of 12 straight wins to secure his second NORBA Championship. He then used his racing experience by becoming a bicycle designer for Marin Mountain Bikes, Merlin, Kona, Shimano and VooDoo. Joe was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1988. Jacquie Phelan Jacquie is likely the most celebrated female in the sport of mountain biking. She began her racing career is 1981 and her highlights include The NORBA National Championship in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 vice championship. Jacquie has been visible in the sport for almost 25 years and has appeared in numerous TV shows and magazines worldwide. She is also the founder of the Women\u2019s Mountain Bike and Tea Society (WOMBATS) and has been active in teaching skills clinics for all levels of riders. Jacquie was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1988.
Ross Shafer Ross Shafer built his first road frame in Paradise, California in 1976, and continued to build them under the Red Bush banner between carpentry and bike shop jobs. He finally started building frames full-time when he got a job as head frame builder at Santana Cycles. After a year at Santana, Ross turned his frame building skills to mountain bikes. Subsequently, Salsa Cycles was born with six custom built bikes. To further enhance the proper fitting of the frames, he started making custom stems in 1982. Salsa Stems emerged in 1984 as Shafer entered the market of quality cro-moly stems and production frames. Later that year he also introduced the roller cable guide. Ross was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1991. Paul Thomasberg Paul Thomasberg started riding back country trails the summer of 1969 in the Tahoe National Forest. In 1976 Paul cobbled together his first "Mountain Bike." It was a bizarre mix of road, cruiser, BMX, and motorcycle parts with 3.0 tires, 18" motorcycle wheels laced to Phil Wood tandem hubs. Wild Bill of "Shade Tree Racing" fame convinced Paul to attend his first mountain bike race in Whiskeytown. In 1985, Paul wandered into a local welding and fabrication shop of Rod Moses (Interloc Racing Design) to find someone to help him design an extra long seat post for his mountain bike. With Paul\u2019s influence Rod sat down and created the two-bolt seat post design that is used by many aftermarket companies today. By 1987 Paul was recognized for his ability to test mountain bike parts and provide valuable feedback to designers and engineers. He is chosen by WTB to race and evaluate their new product designs. In 1988 Paul met Brian Skinner from Shimano and was offered bike parts to test. 1989 Paul moves to Bend Oregon and helps found the Central Oregon Trail Alliance. Paul was inducted in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2004.
Paul Sadoff
Paul started out as bike mechanic in 1976 and built his first frame in 1978. The first frame was built for himself out of necessity since he couldn\u2019t afford to purchase a custom frame. Each frame led to another until Paul gave in and became a full time builder in 1988. Paul\u2019s frames have been ridden at the Olympics and at world championship cyclocross and mountain bike races around the world. In the world of mass production, each Rock Lobster frame is hand built by Paul and Paul only. The painting is the only job left to outside hands. When many small builders have given up or been bought out, Paul still continues to build in much the same way as when he started nearly 30 years ago.
