You hit it on the head (or knee) Ted. I used to ride at a place in So. Cal that had a hill starting right out of the parking lot. No warm up at all. I used to take it really easy the first few miles but there was this other hill. It taunted me, it teased me, it invaded my dreams (the good ones if ya know what I mean). It always made me walk, and I hated that hill. They called it "Vomit Hill" and I saw more than one poor soul kneeling on the side of the trail adding credence to that name. One day I decided I'd had enough and that no matter what I was going to climb Vomit Hill. I did, I made it over the top but in the end the hill got its revenge as on the next little pip squeak excuse for a bump in the trail I felt this sharp pain in my knee and it was all over from there. I still hate that hill but at least it leaves my good dreams alone....

Kendra,

Welcome to the list. Hope you don't feel too out of place; no one else on the list is obsessed with Masis. ;-)

Don't forget, as you wade through a certain amount of crap, to pick up the priceless jewels of knowledge that are mixed in with the muck.

The archives may also contain information to feed your obsession.

Brian Baylis La Mesa, CA Obsessed with lots of things. Muck not being one of them.

My name is Kendra Coatney and I live in Seattle, WA. I am 26 years old and have a passion for bikes but very little knowledge. I want to learn as much as I possibly can about all things bikes. I began riding as a child, but really got into bikes about four years ago. I had a bunch of friends that were bike messengers and, me being a massage therapist, was able to trade massage for bike parts. Within about two weeks I had everything I needed. I also traded massage for the building of my bike. It is an aluminium Diamond Back, straight fork, road frame. I covered it in stickers and rode the life out of it over the last four years. About two and a half years ago I bought my baby (frame, fork, BB only)...my Masi Team 3V. I haven't been able to afford to build it all Campy, so I never built it. A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I decided to tear apart my Diamond BAck and see what we could use to build my Masi. Of course most of the parts fit ok, but I had to buy a few things. It's all Shimano parts right now (some ultegra, some 600, some RSX), but it is rideable. I cannot get over how comfortable this bike is. The components are casuing me some trouble, but hte frame rides like a dream (it is the first bike my boyfriend and I have ever built up so some of the trouble is simple adjustments). I am officially obsessed with my new bike. I am looking forward to building a collection of vintage bikes (as soon as I can afford to do so). My boyfriend rides a 1980 Univega Gran Rally. I got him into bikes about a year and a half ago and now it's all we talk about. We are still new at this bike thing, but are sponges for knowledge! You gotta start somewhere! I have been reading posts and thank all of the people who share their insight! Every bit helps me to learn the art of bikes. Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope to get to know all of you!

Fantastic photographs worthy of any of the magazines seen in hairdresser or dentists waiting areas... Mine (yes I still have hair) supplies the BMW Owners in-house magazine and Golf World, to reflect his prices of course.. I digress. Anyway. I have to say, the one let down in the portraits are those very functional but very ugly bike stands that kind of detract from the beautiful machinery they're holding up. Has anyone any better, less visible (preferably invisible) suggestions ?

Perhaps Ken could give us all (especially me)! some tips as to how he lights those shot's ?. Being marginally camera inept, I never seem to be able to produce a similar view shadow-less !

Don,

I have been very excited about this show coming close to where I live. Hearing that you will not allow individuals to bring their cameras to the event is absolutely confounding. Do you actually have an interest in promoting the work of the exibitors or is the NAHMBS more about you as a promotor? I can't tell.

CRs,

Being the one in my house with no money (the wife and kids are doing OK, thanks), I was not in a position to buy Jan Heine and Jean-Pierre Praderes book, "The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles" so I petitioned our local library to purchase it and they came through! I picked it up last night and was only honked at at three intersections as I tried to flip through it on the way home.

I wonder how many have been sold to other libraries. Jan, do you have those statistics? I'm going to "pass this book around" to friends who might not otherwise be aware of these types of bicycles and would certainly not be a potential buyer of the book in normal circumstances (I don't want to undercut outright sales).

I will probably use my full three week check out time though ... :_)

Thanks Jan and Jean-Pierre and thanks Springfield/Greene County Library!

For those that have been keeping track over the years you'll know the journey M and I have been on. For those that haven't been around very long all I can saw is I'm one multiple moving monkey. Well we're at it again, this time it's Vancouver, B.C. In a week from today Mitzi will be officially Dr. Mitzi. On top of that, in September she'll be starting a one-year teaching position at UBC. The upside is moving to a cool city, and since she's being hired through NAFTA I get a work visa. The downside is that we'll most likely be moving again in a year and Ivy Cycles is going to spend another year on the back burner. I am building, but it's just a sideline these days.

Anyway, what I'm looking for is bike info on Vancouver. I know there are some listies are in the city so any inside info would be great. Are there any really cool shops I should see? Are there any "classic" bike rides in the area? Any other info I should know? thanks, Brandon"mokeyman"Ives digging around for a toque and learning to say 'eh' in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Greetings campers and cycling Sherlocks

More buried treasure rediscovered while digging ever deeper in the archives at home, looking for something else, which of course I didn't find, and now don't even remember. Maybe I was actually just prospecting. Doesn't matter.

As usual, just taking a SWAG at the approximate years for both of these. Close enough for me. Pretty certain they aren't any earlier than the year listed, but your memories may vary. Any additional clues from you would be appreciated.

Both were scanned from large poster type brochures, so don't hassle me about any file sizes, imperfections, inconsistencies, or lack of recognizable order. It coulda been a whole lot worse.

Larry, MANY thanks for these.

It's interesting to see Dawes providing such complete specs, including frame angles, for their machines in the c. 1964 catalogue. So many catalogues including the notorious Raleigh US market one for 1969 just sai d "the Raleigh Professional is a swell bike that's real fast".

This latest catalogue also answers the question that Dawes were limited hu b gears to what they had reverted to by 1964: your basic SA AW three-speed "Sports" models. We had a Dawes catalogue from 1949 on the old Roll Britannia site and they were fitting Cyclo-Benelux derailleurs to all of their club/racing machines even back then.

Thanks again.

Is a vintage steed mandatory? Will you all pummel me with banana peels and your empty bidons if I ride my OT steed? My smallest gear is a 42-24 right now on my vintage steeds and I think I may need something smaller for GMR. I may be able to switch out to a 42-27 by Sunday at best, since I don't have a triple in my parts box.

For several years during my youth I had the good fortune of riding a 1981 team replica Gitane made with Reynolds 531XL and outfitted with Campy NR parts. The bike even had the infamous Mavic SSC "Paris-Roubaix" hoops. Nearly 25 years later and I'm still trying to reunite myself with such a wonderful machine. I ride a 55cm (54 & 56cm is ok) and would be interested in any replicas from the years 1978-85.

Does anyone know how and where to start looking for such a beast?
