In this case, they wheeled in about 4 large white flood-lamps, and surrounded the photo area with what looked like very reflective white backdrops. They were huge, at least in memory.
As another guy who uses the camera mostly to document rather than to illuminate, I was happy to let Ken do the pictures that mattered -- I'm not about to spend that much on equipment that I would use so seldom (and so poorly). Why do my bike shots look like they were taken with the bike leaning against the white garage door? Because they were.
