In contrast to the bigger motors and special bikes used for the much faster moto-pacing events, derny racing/training on the track is usually done with regular track bikes. At six day races I usually saw the riders choose a pursuit style frame and wheels for the derny events.

I used to train and race regularly behind a derny in Britain and we used our oridinary track bikes (we'd gear up a bit if we got some warning). We'd plant the front wheel on the derny spinner sometimes to signal "faster". But hand signals seemed to be plenty of communication with the derny rider. With several derny/rider combos on the track, or worse, several bikes behind a single derny at 30mph plus, there was way to much for me to keep track of to allow me to also talk over a radio.
