Well that was our tandem on our first vintage group ride. The actual issue was one of the rear Matthauser pads had the rubber come completely off leaving the metal backing on the downhill. These are the original Matthauser pads on a 1980 Jack Taylor mounted on Mavic canti brakes. Once we lost the rear brake I just wanted to get to the bottom of the hill and let the group know we were going back. Almost at the bottom the front tire tube blew from the rim heat. The tires and tubes were brand new and the team weight is closer to 300lbs. On the drive back home I picked up a full set of Cool Stop pads and they are now installed with much better braking and we also have a Arai rear drum brake on order. On to the next ride.
