Given the same hub, spoke count must be the most critical factor. 28 is OK for some, 32 for most. Some of those soft metal washers between the spoke head and the spoke hole seem to help too.

For those who fear spontaneous failure while the wheel is hanging in the garage, quietly minding its own business: try air-conditioning and avoid direct sunlight!

Would hook-ended Hoshi spokes reduce the stress on the flanges perhaps? I

put a LOT of miles on a radially spoked low-flange Record hub with those an d it's still hanging in the carport years later none the worse apparently. Kurt Sperry Bellingham WA
