Note that two of the bidders, including the successful one, are Japanese collectors. That's the usual prescription for astronomical prices. We usually see the Japanese collectors bidding up old French stuff, but evidently at least a couple of them have an interest in British bikes. Maybe the Japanese collector market is starting to diversify, or maybe its just an aspect of that market that hadn't been noticed before here.
