Subject: [CR]Introduction date of Columbus SLX

Columbus introduced its new series of "superbutted" tubes, designed by the Mechanical Institute of the Milan Polytechnical School at the autumn trade shows in 1983. The first showing, in public, was at the 70th Salon du Cycle et Motocycle in Paris in September of that year.

I remember negotiating with staff on the Columbus stand, the supply of samples of their tube sets to Ets Duret, whose "Geliano" range of frames I used to import into the UK. The new SLX tube set was offered at that time, and I recall ordering some samples for my own use. These arrived early in 1983; my first SLX frame, according to my records, was built in March 1983.

In the mid to late 80s, Columbus introduced the TSX series that provided the helicoidal reinforcements at the head-tube ends of the down and top-tubes. I think that these added about 70gms to the weight of a tubing set.
