Marc,I commuted to work during the 70's and 80's, and used one of those Subitez bottle generator lighting systems. It was an urban commute with fair street lighting. I must say the light output was meagre....For period correctness, use them, but I would suggeat supplimenting them with a halogen on the handlebars or a caver style headlamp on your helmet. Also a blinkie on your saddle and a reflective belt. Harvey is right, you are putting your life on the line and technology has improved significantly in the lighting arena. You might check the iBOB and iTouring lists for additional info.
